Rachel Huber
Scuba diving · Sustainability · Brand Experience
Most ocean stories are told from the surface — shaped by trends, quick impressions, or secondhand knowledge. My work is grounded in time spent underwater, in the field, and behind the scenes of ocean-facing industries.
I work at the intersection of ocean science, sustainable travel, and storytelling, helping publications, brands, and organizations communicate complex marine topics with clarity, credibility, and heart. Whether I’m writing a long-form feature, shaping a marketing plan, or developing educational resources, my focus is always the same: accurate, accessible communication that respects both the audience and the ocean.
With a background in scuba diving, marketing strategy, and long-form journalism, I bring both field experience and big-picture thinking to every project. That combination allows me to move easily between lived experience and research, creativity and structure — and to build work that lasts beyond a single campaign or trip.

The Perspective Behind my Work – Telling stories that dive deeper

Hi, I’m Rachel — an ocean-focused writer, strategist, and educator based in Sooke, BC, on Vancouver Island.
My perspective has been shaped by time underwater, time on the coast, and now, time seeing the ocean through the eyes of my child. Scuba diving first taught me how interconnected ocean systems are — and motherhood has sharpened my sense of what stories matter, and why accuracy and care aren’t optional.
I’m drawn to work that sits at the intersection of lived experience and long-term impact: coastal cultures, sustainable tourism, seaweed, and the systems that support ocean-based livelihoods. Whether I’m writing, building educational resources, or supporting organizations with their marketing strategy, my focus is always on depth over novelty — work that respects both people and place.
Seaweed, in particular, has become a lens through which I explore food systems, climate resilience, and everyday ocean literacy. It’s practical, overlooked, and deeply connected to coastal communities — much like many of the stories I’m interested in telling.
I’m always curious, always learning, and still happiest when my work brings me closer to the ocean — ideally with a whale shark or two.
